Founder & Group Publisher

SGB Media Group

Stephen G. Barr is a veteran, author, syndicated columnist, nonprofit advocate, entrepreneur, and the founder and group publisher of SGB Media Group. Since 2006, he has developed and published digital content covering nonprofit leadership, community service, entrepreneurship, public policy, social media, culture, and the challenges facing veterans and underserved communities.

Barr brings decades of experience in publishing, advertising, public relations, fundraising, organizational development, event production, and startup advising. His professional journey has included founding and managing businesses, advising emerging organizations, developing digital publications, and helping entrepreneurs turn promising ideas into sustainable ventures. Through Boardroom Advisory Services, he also provides guidance to nonprofit boards and executive directors on governance, strategy, fundraising, communications, and organizational growth.

Service has remained a defining part of Barr's life. A United States Air Force veteran, he has volunteered with organizations including Team Rubicon, The Mission Continues, the Travis Manion Foundation, Bunker Labs, and other community and veteran-support initiatives. He also serves as a community outreach coordinator for The Not Forgotten Outreach and Veterans Farm, supporting programs that connect veterans to land, community, and purpose. His work reflects a particular interest in disabled and displaced veterans, disaster survivors, older professionals seeking encore careers, marginalized entrepreneurs, and small nonprofit organizations working close to the communities they serve.

Barr's perspective is also shaped by personal adversity. Following his evacuation during New Mexico's 2022 Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, he endured displacement and a series of serious health emergencies. Those experiences deepened his commitment to disaster recovery, government accountability, veterans' services, mental-health advocacy, and the importance of strong community-based organizations.

On a personal level, Barr has been single by choice for more than 40 years. He is the co-founder of Dad Found Not Lost and has been an advocate for non-custodial fathers' rights since 2008 — work rooted in his belief that strong families and engaged fathers are essential to healthy communities. He is also the founder and publisher of A Caregiver's Silence ((acaregiverssilence.wordpress.com)), a syndicated publication advocating for family caregivers and the often-invisible work they perform in support of loved ones. Additionally, he is the author and publisher of A Divine Catharsis ((adivinecatharsis.wordpress.com).), a personal writing platform exploring faith, resilience, and the human experience

About The Nonprofit Ledger

The Nonprofit Ledger™ is an independent digital publication devoted to the people, organizations, and ideas advancing the public good. Founded and edited by Stephen G. Barr, it provides practical guidance, informed commentary, organizational profiles, and thoughtful analysis for nonprofit leaders, board members, volunteers, fundraisers, philanthropists, social entrepreneurs, and community advocates.

The publication examines the full nonprofit landscape — from forming an organization and building an effective board to raising funds, managing volunteers, finding grants, measuring impact, and maintaining public trust. It also highlights smaller organizations and grassroots leaders whose work is often overlooked by larger media outlets.

The Nonprofit Ledger™ believes that effective nonprofit leadership requires more than good intentions. It demands sound governance, financial responsibility, ethical decision-making, strategic thinking, compelling communication, and a genuine connection to the people being served. Its mission is to make those principles understandable and useful to organizations of every size.

Published by SGB Media Group, The Nonprofit Ledger™ combines professional insight with the voice of lived experience. It is both a resource for strengthening nonprofit organizations and a platform for recognizing the individuals who dedicate their time, talent, and energy to serving others.
